2012 Trend Book - Fall 2010

This project was created for the graduate level computer-aided fashion design class, FASH 721, at SCAD-Atlanta. The purpose of this project was to create a trend book for a season in the future that had 10 individual themes that related to one general umbrella theme.  Each theme had to have color swatches, a fashion illustration, and fashion flats of key silhouettes.

My general umbrella theme was "2012" and each theme was generated based on future events that could be going on during 2012. The physical version of this had real customized envelopes exactly like the ones you see with each theme, and within each envelope were color chips for that theme's color palette. The trend book was presented in a file folder labeled "Confidential!" and the layout of each theme was inspired by secret file documents.
There's an awful lot of talk about whether or not the government is too big and getting too much into our private affairs, hence the Orwellian 1984 theme.
2012 is obviously an election year, lots of media coverage of buttoned up politicians can certainly influence a preppier trend.
The ladies of Washington are known to inspire trends, as well.
China is a rising economic super-power who is estimated to keep growing throughout 2012.  This trend taps into "communist chic" if you will.
The flip side of "communist chic" is China's colorful, anything goes, street style.
2012 is a big year for the superhero in cinema (The Avengers, The Dark Knight...etc.), and we all probably wish such heroes actually walked among us.
In response to foreign tension, political tension, getting our troops out of the middle east and so on that will continue to be a hot topic with 2012 being an election year, you can't help but want to make love and not war.
A trend inspired by rebellion.  Mind you, I created this in 2010 and had no idea such massive protests such as Occupy Wall Street...etc. would erupt.
There's a good bit of talk about the world ending in 2012.  There's also talk of nuclear war with some of our enemies, hence this theme.  And yes, that envelope was burnt with a gas stove.  Don't try that at home.
The Middle East is a huge area of contention and influence for the U.S., hence this trend inspired by conservative Middle Eastern fashion.
